“To Think, People Like You Once Ruled Our Country”

November 14, 2008

One of the best things about open societies is that, when they are working right, they are boring.

A few days ago, I bumped into William Frist, Sr in a parking lot. It was raining heavily. He was wearing a translucent blue plastic poncho. He looked like a dopey tourist.

Think of what he symbolizes—and of how many people lived in fear of him, just a year or two ago.

Think of him making his way across a parking lot, wet and dopey.

Sometimes America is an eminently loveable place.
